Call for applications for the new InteRussia fellowship in Oriental studies is now open
The Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund supported by the Presidential Grants Foundation are launching a call for applications for the InteRussia scientific and research fellowship in Oriental studies for specialists from post-Soviet states, the Middle East, and North Africa.
InteRussia is an opportunity for aspiring experts in archaeology, history, and political science to get fully immersed into Russian academia. Participants will visit major museums and archaeological sites, take part in expert sessions at universities and think tanks, and exchange experiences with counterparts from various countries.
The main advantage of the program is an opportunity to work under the guidance of lead Russian scholars from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOS RAS).
The first round will be organised in English and hosted at the IOS RAS from April 1-29, 2025.

The fellowship is to result in an original individual research project of 15,000-25,000 characters (incl. spaces) in English based on the submitted research proposal.
Who can apply?
To participate in the competitive selection, applicants will have to meet the following requirements:
- Nationals from post-Soviet, the Middle East or North Africa states
- Age 24-39
- Professional command of English (CEFR C1 and higher)
- Academic status: a Ph.D. degree or at least 3 years of working experience at academic institutions/think tanks or Ph.D. studies in progress
- Research schedule: submission of a research proposal on the selected area of study
- Academic independence: absence of any employment/previous enrollment in academic programs /other relations with the IOS RAS (including local Ph.D. studies or thesis defense procedure in progress)
Attention: an applicant must not be studying in Russia and/or working in Russia in the year of the fellowship program.
Applicants for the fellowship will be selected on a competitive basis. The competition criteria include:
- the academic level, relevance, maturity and feasibility of the applicant’s research proposal;
- academic publications;
- letters of recommendation (2-3);
- other research and expert activities of the applicant (conferences, grants awarded, academic fellowships, expert publications, opinion pieces/comments in the media, etc.);
- results of the online interview.
How to apply?
- Sign up on the English version of the Gorchakov Fund’s website. If you did not receive a registration verification email, check your spam folder.
- Navigate to the “My Projects” section, click on the “Create application” button, select the “InteRussia Oriental Studies 2025” contest and hit ”Yes.”
- Fill in all mandatory fields.
- Attach your research proposal on the selected area of study.
- Click on the “Submit” button in the “Apply” section and wait for the status to change from “Preparing” to “Submitted.”

Terms of participation:
The organisers will cover the following costs:
- travel expenses to/from Moscow;
- double room in a hotel;
- visa support;
- a scholarship of RUB 30,000 for the duration of the fellowship.
The following costs are borne by the participants:
- medical insurance;
- meals during the fellowship.
The deadline for applications is February 16, 11:59 p.m. Moscow time (UTC +3). The results of the competitive selection will be sent to all candidates via email.
