III International Scientific and Practical Conference "World Ocean – Space of Cooperation and Competition"
On November 20-21, 2025, Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO RAS) held the Third International Scientific and Practical Conference “The World Ocean - A Space for Cooperation and Competition”, dedicated to the memory of the Fleet Admiral of the Soviet Union S.G. Gorshkov.
It traditionally brings together Russian and foreign experts on regional issues, economic and political processes related to various types of maritime activities, maritime security, maritime law, as well as active duty and reserve officers of the Russian Navy and navies of other countries. The conference has gained international recognition and is held in two languages (Russian and English), with simultaneous interpretation provided.
The 2025 conference ‘Old Theatres – New Challenges’ is dedicated to the anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Given the important role that the navy and naval forces as a whole played in achieving victory over Germany, Italy, Japan and their allies, it is important to discuss the changed strategic role of traditional theaters of war, the dynamics of naval power, and new technical solutions that threaten to overturn the traditional view of warfare at sea. The dynamics of global and regional maritime trade as well as introduction of new technologies for the extraction of marine resources were analyzed. All sections were comprehensive and included presentations on political, economic, historical and security issues.
At “The Greater Mediterranean between Peace and War” section, CAIS Researcher Grigory Lukyanov presented his paper “The Impact of the Libyan Crisis on the Balance of Power and Security in the Mediterranean”.
