International School for Early-Career Researchers “Contemporary Research on the Sultanate of Oman: Concepts, Methods, Texts” in Saint Petersburg
On November 25-29, 2025, Institute of Asian and African Studies (HSE University – Saint Petersburg) held the International School for Early-Career Researchers “Contemporary Research on the Sultanate of Oman: Concepts, Methods, Texts”.
The concept of the school was created in collaboration with the Center for Arabic Studies and Humanities at the University of Nizwa. The Sultanate of Oman was the focus of interdisciplinary research. The programme of the week-long intensive course included interdisciplinary lectures, workshops, a colloquium on the book Sufism after the USSR, a laboratory for translating Omani literary fiction, and a series of cultural events featuring open lectures and film screenings.
The School attracted researchers of various profiles, from historians and philologists to Political Studies specialists and economists focusing on the Middle East.
The experts represented Institute of Asian and African Studies (HSE University – Saint Petersburg), Center for Arabic Studies and Humanities (University of Nizwa), IOS RAS and other academic institutions from Russia and abroad.
Bachelor, major and postgraduate students of Russian universities specializing in Middle East Studies, could participate in the School.
On November 28, Senior Researcher at Central Eurasia Research Center Dr. Sofya Ragozina hosted the workshop “Islamic Religious Leadership in the Digital Era”.
On November 29, CAIS Researcher Grigory Lukyanov hosted the workshop “Working with Historiography in Contemporary Middle East Studies”.
