Career Development Program “Contemporary Oriental Studies in Russia: Society, Economy, Law”
On November 11-28, 2024, the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS and the Institute for International Studies, MGIMO University, held a joint career development program “Contemporary Oriental Studies in Russia: Society, Economy, Law” for researchers, educators, postgraduate students and young scholars.
The program was attended by 745 trainees from 14 countries and 47 Russian cities.
The program consisted of 8 lectures on current issues of the research of various regions – East, South and Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, read by IOS RAS scholars:
- CAIS Chief Research Fellow Prof. Alexander Yakovlev read a lecture on the phenomenon of modernization and its impact on the development of the Middle Eastern and North African countries.
- Head of the Department of Economic Studies Prof. Alexander Akimov dedicated his lecture to the Far Eastern center of world economy, outlined the potential of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and compared it to the possibilities and prospects before the Western states.
- Head of the Center for Agricultural Research and Food Security Dr. Irina Deryugina discussed key issues in the research of agriculture in the East.
- CAIS Leading Research Fellow Prof. Vladislav Tolstykh read a lecture on the international law and its application in the Eastern countries.
- Senior Research Fellow of the Center for Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania Dr. Alexander Popov delved into the economy of Indonesia, its potential and prospects of Russian-Indonesian cooperation.
- Senior Research Fellow of the Department of Economic Studies Dr. Nelli Semenova described the situation in port construction in China, showing its significance for the growth and development of the country’s foreign trade.
- Leading Research Fellow of the Center for Middle East Studies Prof. Natalia Ulchenko analyzed different systems used to assess the results of European trade expansion into the Ottoman Empire.
- Chief Research Fellow of the Center for Study of Contemporary China Prof. Andrey Ostrovsky provided a comprehensive overview of the economic reforms conducted in China over the last 70 years.
487 trainees received certificates of professional development on course completion.
The program is a part of the IOS RAS – MGIMO University Consortium “New Russian Oriental Studies” supported by MGIMO University Development Program “Priority 2030”.
