“Oriental Studies in Russia 2024: Assessments by the Professional Community”. Report by Prof. Vasily Kuznetsov

 
We are glad to announce the publication of the report “Oriental Studies in Russia 2024: Assessments by the Professional Community” by Deputy Director of IOS RAS, Head of CAIS, Prof. Vasily Kuznetsov.

The report continues the research of the current situation in Russian Oriental Studies published in 2023 within the framework of the Consortium of IOS RAS and MGIMO University. Last year, our goal was to analyze the state of Oriental Studies research and education in Russia, outline the trends of their development and highlight the key problems. This year’s report mostly provides personal opinions of scholars rather than an objective assessment of the situation.

We interviewed more than 30 leading scholars, directors and presidents of Oriental Studies-related departments of the universities and research centers from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Ulan-Ude, Vladivostok – the cities where key Oriental Studies schools are concentrated. We discussed the current state of Oriental Studies in Russia, its strengths and weaknesses, challenges and issues it faces, prospects of its further development. The text is largely comprised of direct quotes from the conversations – they allow the reader to hear the entire polyphony of opinions and views.
