Consortium Cooperation Agreement between IOS RAS and MGIMO University
On July 15, 2023, as part of the Priority 2030 development program, the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences signed a consortium cooperation agreement. The aim of the consortium is to carry out research work aimed at studying the current state of oriental studies in Russia and the prospects for their development in the interests of expert and analytical support of foreign policy, economic cooperation and humanitarian relations.
The participants of the consortium strive to contribute to the creation and establishment of a new national school of oriental studies, expertise and training of specialists on the basis of integration of the best national practices and reconceptualization of approaches accepted in the international community.
This task is especially urgent in the context of the transformation of the global world order, the establishment of a more equitable multipolar world, increasing competitive opportunities of non-Western powers and intensification of Russia's foreign policy ties with Eastern states.
In the foreseeable future it is planned to consolidate the best national traditions and schools of oriental studies on the basis of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and MGIMO, which will make it possible to create a resource center of oriental studies expertise and teaching of federal importance with further dissemination of results among universities and scientific institutions of the country specializing in oriental studies.
The development of fundamentally new training programs for orientalists both at the level of basic professional and supplementary educational programs will significantly improve the quality of specialized education, as well as contribute to the formation of effective cooperation between science and education in the interests of the real sector of the economy and public administration.
The project is implemented based on the analysis of Russia's historical experience in the study of the East and the specificity of methodological approaches developed in Russian Oriental Studies, taking into account the integration of the best practices of Oriental schools.
On the part of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the scientific supervisor of the joint creative team is V.A. Kuznetsov, Deputy Director, Head of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, and on the part of MGIMO - M.A. Suchkov, Director of the Institute of International Studies, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Analysis of International Problems.
The primary results of the joint work will be presented by the end of 2023 at specialized conferences of the IOS RAS and MGIMO.
