Scientific Seminar “Political Economy of Conflicts in the Arab World”

 
On March 27, an open scientific seminar “The Political Economy of Conflicts in the Arab World” organized by the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences took place.The moderators were senior researchers at CAIS Igor Matveev and Sergei Serebrov.

Reports on country cases were made by the staff of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS: Alexander Al-Janabi, Svetlana Babenkova, Grigory Lukyanov, Igor Matveev, Sergei Serebrov, Anastasia Vasilenko, Iliya Vedeneev.

The event has turned out to be representative. The presentations affected almost all conflicts and confrontation zones in the vast MENA region (Iraq, incl. Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Libya, and Western Sahara). Special attention has been paid to the problems of high internationalization of conflicts and crises, social contradictions, multiple zones of territorial control (using the information visualization method in presentations), was well as the theoretical concepts of parallel and siege economies, divided cities, and economies of internal armed conflicts (EIACs).
